Day 955 of the Adventure
What are Heirloom Seeds? I had no idea until just a few years ago. In broad terms, Heirloom and/or heritage seed refers to open pollinated seeds/plants that have been handed down from generation to generation - generally a variety that is at least 40-50 years old, is usually no longer available in the commercial seed trade and that has been preserved and kept true in a particular region. Most, if not all, originated prior to the practice of hybrid pollination. There's more to it, but mostly this definition suits my need for understanding it deeper. There's quite a heritage behind it and certainly a robust following of growers who commit to the legacy of growing heirloom plants. Today, Shelley and I along with our daughter and grand-daughter visited a local Heirloom Seed company for their Spring gardening Festival. I certainly cannot enter an heirloom seed discussion with any intelligence. I do know that of the thousands of attendees at the festival, there was a sense of "importance" to them regarding the perpetuation of these rare varieties. Something about that alone lends itself to mystique surrounding this culture.
Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co. is located in Mansfield Missouri. Also the home of Laura Ingalls Wilder of the Little House on the Prairie fame. It's fortunate that it is such a close drive for us to visit such an interesting operation. Baker Creek grows Heirloom seeds in huge greenhouses as their main business. They also have a "Pioneer Village" on site adding to the atmosphere of the property. During the festival, the entire place was booming with activity and made for one of the more enjoyable experiences I've partaken in for a while. I was able to attend a seminar on the subject of Aquaponics which has fascinated me for years. It's also something I've had on my radar to try on our property once we get some of the other projects out of the way. With that said, It may be time for me to get back out and get busy installing solar panels!
