Day 968 of the Adventure
"Troublesome Wild Animal" is the definition of "Varmint", and YES, we have a few. For the most part, our wildlife is a friendly lot. With the deer fence around the garden, they aren't much of a bother. Actually, anything that keeps its distance from the cabin is fine with me. It's the couple of varmint varieties that don't know how to stay in their lane that become the problem. Those are the ones who think the cabin might make a good appetizer, late night snack or even a tasty main course. I'm not sure how or why they would feel this way. Nevertheless, until we make an example of a few of them, our cabin is evidently too irresistible for them. The over-abundance of grey squirrels are the primary offenders. Going into our third summer here, we've learned that a bit of gunfire will teach them to stay out of range enough that they remove themselves from the "Most Wanted" list on their own. My routine is a simple one. It's about 7:30 pm and about 76 degrees. Perfect weather for iced tea on the back deck, updating our "Cabin Life" story while keeping the peacemaker handy for any rogue challengers venturing in for a look. With my eyesight anymore, warning shots is about the extent of my threat. As long as it works though, I'm good with it. It's not All-Out war, but it's an adequate deterrence.
