Day 1,225 of the Adventure
I got myself dragged off into the weeds yesterday being all nostalgic about wood stoves. After running its course, a relative saw it and sent me a few pictures she had collected from her grandparents, which were also my uncle and aunt that I had mentioned in the story. So, here we go down into another patch of nostalgia weeds. For those who are still unsure of my "self-sufficiency" roots. This is me and our old sawmill from probably the 1983 or so date. For those old enough to remember, every magazine of the time ran classified ads on the back several pages. One of which that caught my eye every time was the one for a "One Man Sawmill" by a company called Foley Bellsaw. Once I had contacted them, I began receiving a relentless amount of correspondence from them. None of which I ever considered to be "Junk Mail". Being an avid woodworker by then, I was always trying to get local mills to saw some specific cuts of lumber for me. While they all said they would accommodate my request, none of them ever actually did. Finally, in frustration, I got out my sawmill order form, filled it out and applied for their "Easy Financing" plan. I was approved and for a mere $108 per month for two and a half years, I owned a sawmill. That was just the beginning. Next came the need for a power plant for it, then something to manhandle the logs, and on and on. When it was all said and done, I had procured an old 1930's something DC Case tractor and various other log handling tools to run my new venture. That same uncle who provided opportunity to hunt on his property seemed happy to let me set up a sawmill on his place. He even gave me permission to use some of the many cottonwood trees to build my mill structure.
While I could easily wax nostalgic over my old mill, I'll save it for another day. For now, I'm happily content to take a very short stroll down memory lane with this picture.
