Modern Day Victory Garden - July 30

 July 30, 2025

Day 1,398 of the Adventure

I heard the term "Victory Garden" the other day for the first time in a very long time. More importantly, it was being used in its original context back from the World War I and II setting. While it was not in the context of the wars but within the framework of the purpose of the Victory Gardens during the wars. Back during World Waa I and II, the concept of "Victory Gardens" was established as a method to increase food production during wartime. It was also meant to bring communities together, promote self-sufficiency and boost morale during war. For the most part, they did just that. In today's world, we are not battling the difficulties of a global war, but we are certainly fighting the effects of the difficulties of personal economic hardships. This was the frame of reference that the term Victory Garden was being used. Personally, I feel it's a very appropriate idea. This year and last, Shelley and I have raised a garden for the first time in over 30 years. Along with the garden, we placed a strong emphasis on preserving the produce we grew. As we're in our second year. I find that when I pass the canned goods shelves and shelves of freeze-dried items, we still have an abundance from last year while we are adding to the new preserves this year. More importantly, we have not had to purchase anywhere near the level of produce as we have in the past. We've been eating fresh during the growing season and once that comes to a close, we'll be back to the stockpile of preserved goods through the fall, winter and early spring. As I continually encounter videos and postings about how life has become financially nearly impossible for many, the idea of a modern-day Victory Garden certainly has a new-found place in our world.
