Day 1,236 of the Adventure
Not a farmer, but sometime wish I was. Since making our move to the backwoods, and touting the life of back to the land, self-sufficiency, I've evidently set myself up for this. "This", is the comments from friends who know me pretty well who, "Can't see me as a Farmer". Well, it's easy to dispel that notion. I'm not a farmer. Honestly, I don't think I could handle the pace, stress and workload of farming. No, I'm just a guy, who along with a willing wife, loves the "Back to the Land" lifestyle. You would notice by our lack of any kind of livestock, that farm-life is not our goal. Much of what we do resembles farming..... I guess. After all, I do wear a Carhartt looking winter coat and will even strap myself into a pair of insulated over-alls when real cold weather invades our woods. That's more from my construction background than it is from a farm background.
I do refer to our place as a "Homestead" quite often. I suppose that's where the confusion arises from. As time passes, we may consider adding some small livestock to our operation here. Our level of self-sufficiency is lacking a little with the absence of a few chickens/ We would welcome some meat birds and egg layers. Beyond that though, I'm not sure I would venture into anything larger or more complicated. Venison makes up the bulk of our "freezer-stored" meat and there's always plenty of that. An occasional half beef from some real farmer friends covers the rest. Our garden will likely be the only crops we raise. Possibly some berry bushes and fruit tress may work their way into our homestead at some point. Farm kind of stuff is an important part of the life of self-sufficiency as it relates to "food independence", but it' just a part. The farmer in me is really just a figment of my imagination. When I'm planting the garden, harvesting it's bounty, or preserving it for later, I'll be happy to pretend that I'm farming!
Carry On
Adventure Quote: “What we do see depends mainly on what we look for. ... In the same field the farmer will notice the crop, the geologists the fossils, botanists the flowers, artists the coloring, sportsmen the cover for the game. Though we may all look at the same things, it does not all follow that we should see them.” ―
