Is Simple Really That Simple? - April 3

April 3, 2025

Day 1,280 of the Adventure

It's probably just the nature of the rainy, gloomy weather we've been stuck in for the past two or three days that has me in a funky mood. Being cooped up in the cabin with nothing interesting to do is frustrating for people that like to be doing things. The fact is, we slept a good part of the day away. Not in one big sleep, but in several naps, with lunch, reading, keeping the fire stoked up and just being lazy spread out in between. Before embarking on our backwoods life, we contemplated our next move after selling one of the businesses. My dominant thoughts were to begin a self-sufficient lifestyle, which is what we decided upon. Still, in the back of my mind, I was also considering simply finding a nice place near the lake where I could just relax, go fishing, read and write for the fun of it and just not do much of anything else. I even considered.... briefly..... to just buy a small condo and let everyone else take care of the mowing and maintenance, so I could do other things not related to work. I still wonder if that may not have been a wiser choice. No, we chose the "Simple Life". The one where you clear the land, plant the garden, build the cabin, then if that wasn't enough, decide to build the house........... Yeah, THAT simple life! Sometimes I question my own judgement, if not my actual sanity in choosing this life. It's simple, complicated, easy and hard all at the same time. None of which bothers me all that much. It allows me to drink morning coffee by a nice campfire any time I want. It forces me into keeping somewhat physically fit by leaving me no choice but to remain active. It allows for a sense of independence in a world that seems to be growing more dependent. So, in that light, I think I'm still content with our choice of the backwoods over the easy condo existence. On warm, sunny days, it's an easier call to make. Until one of those kinds of days shows back up, I'll just make another pot of coffee and enjoy the glow of the fire in the wood stove from a comfortable chair across the room.
