Stump Burning or Eternal Campfire - June 17

June 17, 2025

Day 1,355 of the Adventure

Part of the tasks involved with converting raw land into something usable and livable is that of removing stumps. We've used almost every technique short of explosives in our stump removal efforts. I'm afraid if I manage to get my hands on explosives, I may very well be tempted to use them for other purposes that I haven't even thought of yet. So, explosives are a temptation I shall resist as best I can for now. We've learned that stumps up to about three inches in diameter can be pulled with a "Brush Grubber". A clever tool for pulling small stuff out of the ground. We've relied on the backhoe to dig out everything bigger than that. The problem is that once you go beyond about eight inches in diameter, the job goes from fifteen minutes to up to all day. Anything bigger than 15-16 inches is in the "all day" range. When we deal with stumps that large, we simply make them or new "campfire site" for as long as it takes to burn them out. The one we have going right now will likely be an all-summer campfire site. It's just beyond the back deck near where we staged the first load of cement blocks for the basement. Of the ten pallets of blocks sitting there, we are now down to four left. The rest have made their way into the basement construction. Shelley wandered out there just as I was sitting here on the deck to light it up for the night. It's okay that it will take this stump a long time to finally burn down. It's a campfire.......... what else is it good for? We always need a campfire around here!
