January 22 - Resort Adventures

January 22, 2019
Day 22 - 343 Days to go
38 Days until March 1
Base Camp Coffee of the Day: Ozark Mountain Turtle
3 Bedroom Cabin at Cross Timbers Cabins

I woke up this morning to an email listing of a resort for sale …….. again. It's a way of life I guess. Not only do we chase the adventure but we are continually chasing the expansion of the adventure. Yesterday's installment of the Adventure included a mention of how our Resort Adventure started unintentionally and just grew. Part of that process is something I picked up from a resort owner up on the Canadian border back in 2011, the same year we purchased Cross Timbers Cabins. We stayed in a campground/resort on Lake Kabetogama  (say that fast a couple times) I think it was called "Porkorney's Lodge" or something like that. Anyway, he had just purchased it and the day we arrived was his first day there. We struck up a conversation one morning by a campfire. As it turned out, he owned another resort property near Ely, MN and another one in Canada that was a remote, fly in, hunting and fishing resort. Until that time, the thought of owning more than one had never crossed my mind. The "Light Bulb" went off in my head that answered a big question about this business.

The Problem: Most small resort properties simply aren't big enough to make a living. The answer to that: Combine two or three of them together as a business and sooner or later they are big enough. (Even if they are not physically connected, they can be connected as a business) The beauty of it is that you don't have to break the bank getting started. Just start small and add to it whenever you can. The second benefit is that you can offer guests different lodging and recreation experiences at different locations. And you know what? ...…. It seems to work...……. Just a random thought on how our business grew.

The afternoon included me working in the drizzling rain installing some equipment at the Black Bear Cabins. I hated the rain, but the temps were warmer than they seem to be over the next week or so. So rain it was. Upon finishing that little project, we met with our possible GM for the Project X (and his wife) to enjoy an excellent Thai meal and discuss some of the more creative aspects of the project. It turned into a long day but a mostly enjoyable one...…… minus the couple hours of working in the rain.

All part of the Adventure I suppose!
