Here we are at the end of March and it's another week in the books at the resorts. The weather has been cool and the business a bit slow, so today has been a good day for reflection on the first three months of 2019. First of all, I'd like to mention that today is the 90th posting of "The Resort Adventures" for 2019. (I actually started in December last year and haven't missed a day since starting) I suppose that doesn't really mean too much other than it's a discipline that I'm trying to develop about telling a simple story.
Yesterday, I had mentioned that I was "experiencing the life and dreams of a young man". The more I thought about that, the more I began to realize how special that statement is. When we began our real estate investing, it was not so much with the goal of making a lot of money. My goal was to gain some control over life and, hopefully, allow me to do what I wanted and enjoyed doing rather than report in to a job every day. Here it is now fifteen years later (more or less) and much of that has become reality. "The Resort Adventure" to me is truly a "Life" adventure. Maybe I'm just weird that way. When a lot of people my age are starting to plan for retirement, here I am trying to figure out how to ramp life up to another level.
I've finally come to realize that whether the experience is big or whether it's small, it doesn't really matter. I get as much enjoyment out of seeing the excitement and pride on a young child's face when they receive their "Free plastic worm fishing bait" in the tackle shop as watching kids (and adults) ride the zip line out of the Pirate Ship in the Trees" at the treehouses. When being a part of providing a family atmosphere when our guests come in off the lake and everybody caught their limits of fish. Working on a cabin with a goal of creating a unique lodging experience is special to me. All of those things and much, much more make up my definition of "The Resort Adventure".
Out Treehouse Builder Randy once mentioned that when he's in a treehouse and nobody else is there except him, his tools and the trees, he's in his "Happy Place". I feel that way about almost every aspect of the Resort Business. It makes every day a Resort Adventure!
