July 15 - Resort Adventures - Saying Good Bye to Mary Teig - 2/6/37 - 7/15/19

Day 196 - 169 Days to go
Base Camp Coffee of the Day: Lost on the Lake

Today was a long and difficult day for our family. We all said good bye to my mom this afternoon as she took her last breath in this life and moved on to her eternal home. We knew time was drawing short for the last couple of weeks and were prepared for this day as much as one can be, still it's a difficult farewell.

You may wonder why I'm making it part of our "Resort Adventure" and the reason would be because it is part of what brought us into the resort life. Dad  and mom would take our family on fishing trips frequently when my sister and I were small children. Many times that included friends with kids our age. My earliest memories included summers at a far distant lake somewhere in Minnesota or Missouri. All exotic locations to a kid. Mom had a love for fishing and travel. We regret that she never took her dream vacation to Hawaii that she talked about all the time. We were able to get her on a cruise with the whole family a few years ago to the tropical island of Cozumel Mexico. At that point of her life, I believe it was almost enough to satisfy her dream, but probably not quite. I am certain that since it included both her kids (my sister and I) and all of her grandkids, it was probably still the highlight trip of her life.

Mom is now gone and it leaves a hole in our lives that can only be filled with memories. In looking back, I'm glad we made an effort to spend memorable times together as we became adults. I honestly wish we had made more frequent attempts to bring the adventure into their lives as our parents grew older. Somewhere along the way, I discovered that it wasn't so much the destination, or the activity..... The success of the memory always came down to the people, and the important ones were family.

So mom was one of the previous generation of Resort Adventurers, and we are now doing what we can to extend the traditions to the next generation following behind us. We know that there will be at least two more generations with our new grandson growing up with a strong resort experience even in his short one year prospective so far.

I'm glad we chose the life we have and if there is any regret, it would be that we took as long as we did to make it more of a dominant part of our life.

Mom loved fishing and I hope she is fishing today!

“The best adventures in life is in the present. Seize the present and make it great adventure.”
