August 11 - DIY Homestead - Finding Home

August 11, 2022

Day 234 of the Adventure

Pre-Sunrise this morning. (It was about 5:45am)
A friend came by yesterday morning for a cup of coffee and a visit. He's one of the few people that makes fairly regular trips down to the woods where we are. We were enjoying our coffee while Shelley was working on the cabin. I don't know if that's a statement of her determination or our indifference to her need to work while we sat by the fire. She did eventually join us which reduced any guilt trip we may have been experiencing.  As we enjoyed the quiet, peaceful morning, the one thing my friend kept coming back to was "It's so quiet here." Which is true. There is the occasional vehicle passing by on the road, way up the hill that breaks up the stillness. We are also close enough to the lake that a far-off boat can be heard from time to time. Beyond that, it's the sounds of wildlife and crackle of fire that is the dominant experience here.

Even though the "serious" goal for this place is to demonstrate the ability to live a self-sustainable lifestyle, the peace and quiet of the woods make this journey very fulfilling. We continue to work on and complete various project we have planned for the remainder of Summer and into the Fall. As this happens, I can already sense that much more time will be spent soaking up the woodland atmosphere and ambiance as the weather cools and it's something I am definitely looking forward to.

We love the woods and would rather be out under a canopy of trees than anywhere else. Others like the agricultural farm setting. Others perhaps the mountains and still others, like my youngest daughter, the beach and ocean. Regardless of your preference, the important thing for you is to find the kind of space where you feel most at home and find a way to live that life. The first step is the hardest one. That step is making the decision in the first place. Once that's done, we tend to start finding ways to put all of the other necessary pieces together.

Carry On
