August 10 - DIY Homestead

Day 233 of the Adventure

A couple days ago, I had mentioned the idea of starting somewhere small, if needed, on your journey to self-sufficiency. While that may lengthen your "end game" process, there are merits to it. What does that mean in terms of real dollars and cents? Well, I know of property that is often listed in the $2,000 to $4,000 range for small lots. Of course that isn't probably enough for you to make your life goals a reality. It is, however, a place to start. A place that's not likely to put undue stress on your journey.

Many of the lower priced lots that I've seen while searching land have been in smaller communities. Many times, these communities have less restrictions regarding minimum house size, the ability to place temporary housing such as an RV or mobile tiny home. Also, regulations regarding the raising of chickens or rabbits are more favorable. This is not the case exclusively though. It's very wise to check with the communities to make sure before committing to a purchase. We've lived in small communities that were very strict on zoning ordinances, only to have a neighboring community literally within one mile that had no zoning ordinances at all.

If you can find a balance of flexibility within the community, which allows for the growth of some sustainable housing and other small scale homesteading practices, small (and affordable) is a great way to get your feet wet in the Self Sufficient" lifestyle.

Carry On.
