August 4 - DIY Homestead - The Sound of Rain

August 4, 2022

Day 227 of the Adventure
Base Camp Coffee of the Day:  Highlander Grogg (Butterscotch/Rum flavors)

The Camp Run-Amuck Waterfall
We were awakened this morning at around 5:30 to the sound of rain on the cabin roof. The same sound that made it very easy to roll over and fall back to sleep for the next three and a half hours. Yes, that means 9am is when we got up to get going. (But I'm okay with that) The attraction of meeting the sunrise with coffee by the fire in the morning is very similar to the attraction of sleeping in to the sound of a steady rain on the roof. Rain has been such a scarce commodity this Summer that I'm very content to simply stay out of its way, keep on sleeping and let it do its thing. As I prepared coffee, I wondered if our waterfall behind the cabin was flowing. I stuck my head out the door to see if I could hear it, but could only hear the sound of rain in the nearby trees. Perhaps we'll walk down the path after a while and see what it's doing.

Our schedule this Spring and Summer has left us no time for exploring beyond the footprint of the cabin area. The work of getting things ready to move in has taken up all of our available time. That never-ending trend of constantly filling the schedule with the necessary tasks is a tough one to break. Even when the necessary isn't quite as "necessary" anymore. At what point is it acceptable to slow down and smell the roses, as they say. Well, today is probably that day.

There are so many beautiful areas around here that all are begging for us to stop for a visit. There's not just the waterfall. There are rock outcroppings, tiny meadows, small springs, the canyon, so many interesting things on this property and all within about a 2-3 minute walk from the cabin. I guess we'll need to start taking more time to play around the place.

Carry On
