August 3 - DIY Homestead - Pressing into Self Sufficiency

August 3, 2022

Day 226 of the Adventure
Base Camp Coffee of the Day:  Lost in the Woods (Colombia/Costa Rica blend)

As we continue to build the Homestead at Camp Run-Amuck, Self -Sufficiency is our "Serious" goal. Simply enjoying life in the woods, of course, is perhaps just as important. Experiencing both together is priceless in my humble opinion. It's very easy to get caught up in the "want more", "need more" "achieve more" life and I suppose age in itself is a tempering tool to that. It feels as if "Relax More", "Enjoy More", Experience Life More" has been rapidly replacing all the rest and that's okay by me. I don't believe poverty and scarcity is healthy by any means, but those attributes are not synonymous with simple, frugal and thrifty living. In fact, it's entirely possible to experience an "Abundance" mentality while enjoying simple, easy living.

I suppose that the term "Simple" can look pretty complicated when viewed through the lens of the work involved in building a homestead property. Just look at nearly any video we've produced and you will see things looking difficult and complicated. While partially true, the reality is that there is something very relaxing and satisfying within the creation process. (I suppose at least to me there is) To reinforce the importance of enjoying life, our schedule seldom begins earlier than 9am or so. The 6am to 9am time slot is reserved for coffee, campfires, enjoying the outdoors, listening to the local wildlife. It's also a time for being grateful to have such a perfect opportunity to live outside the bustle of frantic living.

Is this the definition of Self-Sufficiency? No, I don't think so, but I think the two are a great fit. We did not make our decision to take on the Self-Sufficiency path because of the economy doing its current tailspin. The timing perhaps couldn't have been better though. With prices of everything soaring out of control, finding ways to counter this is even more important now than it has ever been in recent years. Not being a doom and gloom advocate, I don't see apocalyptic events on the horizon. However, if you are trying to survive the crazy costs of housing, food, utilities and living in general, it can probably feel a little apocalyptic. Since our journey and the weird economy are all happening at the same time, I encourage you, like us, to find ways to combat its effects as best you can. We intend to continue to find ways of pressing our way into self-sufficiency in our lives and don't mind sharing the good, bad and ugly experiences.

Carry On.
