August 9 - DIY Homestead - Life by the Fire

August 9, 2022

Day 232 of the Adventure

NO....Not burning Shelley at the stake!
The very welcome rain from last night has put a damper on fire building this morning. It's trying to be respectable but having a rough go of it. Shelley has arrived on the scene and I'm sure it will be roaring in no time. Throughout the Summer, we have been starting the day with coffee by the campfire. Even though it's been hot, an early enough start has made the experience a pleasant one every day. There are three, I guess, reasons we've been so determined with this routine. The first is simply because we enjoy it. Secondly, because all of the root and stump pulling we've been doing has left us with an abundance of wood. Stuff that isn't very good wood for wood stove heating with all the dirt and rocks in it. Thirdly though, it's a routine we NEED to do to get us out of the habit of waking up early and immediately starting to work. You may laugh at that and roll your eyes, but it's true. We have spent our entire lives, and especially the last ten years with the resorts, working hard. Not hard in the sense of physical "hard", but just long hours that have always started early. Obviously, anyone who has been following that part of our journey knows that we did take breaks from it for travel and fun. We even did our best to make the work routine a fun resort-ish kind of experience for ourselves. Still, it was work.

Now that we have embarked on the DIY Homestead life, intentionally shedding off some of that "work discipline" is important to us. A good cup of coffee (or should I say a cup of GOOD coffee ....... there is a difference) by an early morning campfire is a great way to establish that slower, simpler life. Being mostly a black coffee drinker, I have even indulged in applying cream to my morning coffee. Occasionally, even to the extent of using Heavy Whipping Cream. That's how bad I've gotten! (Don't hate on me until you've tried it! lol)

As I enjoy the morning coffee and blog writing, rambling at sunrise, or maybe just a little after that, I can feel the woodland, camp life setting in. I think it will be permanent. Every time I have to venture back to town for anything, the need to get back to the woods quickly becomes the over-riding motivator to get done and get back. Can anyone else relate to that?

I can hear faint rumbles of thunder off in the far distance west. More rain may make it here today and if so, that's okay by me. If not, that's okay by me. I have inside and outside things to do. If outside rules the day, it will be to the background smell of a campfire, sounds of birds and other wildlife, sights of the nearby deep woods. and the taste of fresh woodsy air after last nights summer rain.

Carry On
