September 3 - DIY Homestead - Old Fashioned Mountain Crafts

September 3, 2022

Day 338 of the Adventure

Candy Making
Here in the Missouri Ozarks, there has always been a strong connection to the land with a homesteading culture and tradition. So strong as a matter of fact, that most of the more "Primitive" or "Mountain Skills" still survive and live on in the form of active demonstration. There are a number of small and large venues and attractions very nearby where one can observe, ask questions, and in some cases, even participate in mountain craft. Being within easy driving distance of Branson, Missouri, the opportunities are endless to see how it was done one hundred plus years ago.

Old Fashioned Bakery
Black-Smithing, Candle Making, Glass Blowing, Candy Making, Pottery, Basket Weaving, Soap Making, Log Cabin Building..................... and the list just goes on and on, are all alive and well right here in our own back yard. It's almost as if the "touristy slant" somehow makes the experience an unreal and fake one. The fact is though, that we are very fortunate to have these mostly time forgotten skills at hand to learn from. In some cases, they can help demonstrate useful skills to employ in our homes, farms and homesteads. To carry it a bit further, they are also skills that can represent income streams for the creative homesteader. I'd be lying if I said I have never toured these various locations without filing ideas in the back of my mind for potential income sources for myself at some point down the road.

Developing a repertoire of useful skills for sale or barter is a natural by-product of the homestead or off-grid lifestyle. With hundreds of those skills and products still in demand, picking up a few ideas to add to your own collection of Old-Fashioned" abilities is not such a bad idea. Who knows, if you decide upon learning candy making and begin producing peanut brittle, for example. Or decide on baking fresh cinnamon bread, I may be among your most loyal customers. I can tell you without hesitation there is already a local Berry Farm that gets enough of my business with just their Thunder Muffins alone!

Shelley and I plan to begin video recording some of these craftsmen and women soon and look forward to bringing their stories to you.
