October 14 - DIY Homestead - The Courage to Act

October 14, 2022

Day 378 of the Adventure

Once again, I find myself contemplating the answer to a question that surfaces time after time. What is the best skill to possess when considering a move to a more self-sufficient life? That question is posed in many forms. What is the best skill to go Off-Grid? What is the best skill to start a Homestead? What is the best skill to get away from the Rat-Race? (whatever the "rat-race" means in your personal life) To me, that question is important, but in all cases, I believe there is one critical answer and one critical "skill". It is the most important thing needed, and all the others are secondary. The one most important skill is possessing the courage to act on your passion or conviction. All of the other skills are more mechanical steps and can honestly be learned as needed. If you first have the courage to act on your wishes for a new and different life, you can easily find and apply all of the information, knowledge and skills necessary to accomplish that move. Developing specific skills is nothing more than a learning process. One that will likely be an enjoyable process since they will involve things that are of interest to you along your journey to self-reliance.

Whether your dream is that of a tiny cabin in the woods, a place so "off-grid" where no one will ever find you or a small or large homestead, the number one skill needed is the courage to take your first step in that direction. when used in combination with the willingness to learn anything else that will become necessary, you will find the pathway to the right skills you will need to acquire along the way.
