October 4 - DIY Homestead - Deer Stampede this Morning

October 4, 2022

Day 369 of the Adventure

Not my deer - but that's what it looked like!
I just about got myself caught in the middle of a deer stampede this morning on my way to the campfire. It all happened too quick and unexpectedly for me to get a picture of it. I had just rounded the corner of the utility building when six deer of all sizes, exploded up from the ground just a few steps away and went crashing off into the woods. I guess they didn't see me coming and I didn't see them lying there next to LBJ (Little Black Jeep) It was a mutually startling experience for all of us. Life in the backwoods is that way. Between the bobcats fighting down behind the cabin, deer roaming through the yard, hawks and falcons keeping the squirrels on edge and all the other woodsy kind of activity, you just never know what's going to happen.

I've noticed that the "ground clutter" of undergrowth in the woods is starting to thin out now. From my campfire chair, I can now see the hillside on the opposite side of our small canyon. That part of the property is drawing me to it. I am really looking forward to getting down there and letting my imagination loose on a particular over-look of the canyon. The rocky outcroppings are begging for some company. I think it's going to end up being a spot for another campfire site.  Possibly a rustic covered shelter as well. Something that fits into the natural landscape of the canyon and waterfall area. That will have to wait just a little while yet though.

Carry On
