Day 828 of the Adventure
We've been looking at the back of the property for a while, trying to decide exactly how to make use of its ruggedness and beauty. While it does not really have to "produce" anything. We like just hiking back there and enjoying the solitude and quiet that is there. On the other hand, we would like to do something there that makes it a little more interesting for us, the kids and grandkids. A place that feels like a Great Mystery Adventure.
Sometimes I feel like it would be a good "Hide-Out", I really don't know what I'd be hiding from that I couldn't do just as well up around the cabin. I do think, however that we may practice a little "Backwoods Bushcraft" skills there. What is "Backwoods Bushcraft" you may ask? It's the skills developed to spend time in the backwoods with minimal tools and resources. Things you do with what you find available in nature. It's not a way of life I would enjoy living as a "lifestyle". But I always loved the process, skills and lessons learned when doing these kinds of activities as a Boy Scout. Now that goes back a ways. Quite a ways as a matter of fact. I think a shelter, a firepit, maybe a cache of some sort. Of course, a treasure chest along with a conveniently discovered treasure map would be a hit with the grandkids. There is a local urban legend of gold having been stashed away in a cave around here somewhere on or near the mountain we find our cabin built upon. When researching the legend, the gold is a stretch. There's more documentation on silver being found but even that takes a bit of gullibility to embrace. Most of this area does have a little bit of a lead and zinc history but I suppose anything is possible. I know that Mike and Adreane were down in the creek-bed near where the pic of Shelley was taken and they found some good, gritty black sand. I suppose I should try a pan of it to see if anything turns up. Until then, we'll just have some fun with the legend of it.
