April 8 - The Campfire Trail - Owls in the Middle of the Day

Day 920 of the Adventure

Most of the eclipse day, we were working in the garden. Still trying to get all of the raised beds built. We are a full week later than the deadline we had set for ourselves to be done, but that hasn't stopped us from getting many of them planted already. Plants are sprouting up everywhere and I'm still nervous about deer getting into them all. I can't really finish the deer fence until the beds are done. I'll never be able to squeeze the tractor into the tight areas of the garden once it's finished. That would mean digging all the post holes by hand and WE'RE NOT DOING THAT! So, we keep plugging away at it and soon it will be finished. Today we experienced the solar eclipse while we worked. I did a time lapse video that will be out soon. It's surprising how light it still stayed, even with 98% coverage. We were just outside the path of total coverage and I honestly expected it to get darker. With 98% coverage, I estimate it only grew about 30% darker. I guess it shows that even 2% of sun still showing is enough to hold the darkness off. As it neared 45 minutes to peak eclipse, I began to hear roosters crowing in the far distance. At about 20 minutes to peak, the local owls were hooting at each other. So even though the eclipse did not generate the spectacular mid-day night-time feel I was hoping for, it did bring the owls out for a short time. I guess that made it worth it.
