Introducing Our New Terminator - April 18

April 18, 2025

Day 1,295 of the Adventure

It's not every day you get to engage in something this unusual and interesting. Our garden gets its share of random rodents. Chipmunks, mice, voles and other such pests. They all think they can ravage the plants at will with no consequence. Two years ago, we had a deterrent for them, but he disappeared, and we later found him........ "expired". This year, we recruited a replacement from the campground, where his main source of entertainment apparently, was startling guests. One of our staff members wrangled up a four-foot black snake for us to relocate to our garden. He was not necessarily happy to be handled, nor did he seem to like the trip he made in the 5-gallon bucket. Once he had arrived in the garden and been freed once again, he appears very happy to be patrolling for pests. I have no doubt he will feel obligated to startle us from time to time. It's a side effect of relying upon a snake to partner with you in your garden endeavors. Shelley wants to name him "Terminator". I kind of like just shortening it to "Arnold". We'll see. I doubt if he will answer to either.

Master-Planning Part 2 - April 17

April 17, 2025

Day 1,294 of the Adventure

Yesterday, I cracked open the idea of our plan moving forward on our backwoods property. The core of the vision has always surrounded the ideas of self-sufficiency. The primary focus of that relates to our own self-sufficiency. As things are beginning to "evolve" with our business (more on that later) we are seeing the potential of some new and interesting opportunities. Namely, the chance for building out a larger footprint for teaching what we've been learning since moving down here. Along with that, comes the need for some additional equipment and development. There's still a few more pieces of the puzzle to come into place, but as of now, those are look promising. More to Come!

Master-Planning - April 16

April 16, 2025

Day 1,293 of the Adventure

We are 1,293 days into our Backwoods Adventure, roughly three and a half years, and as strange as it seems, we have never really developed the "Master-Plan" for the property. To be honest, the image in this article is not it. It does, however, give a glimpse into many of the components of our plan. I know, if you've been following us for very long, the question is "How can we be thinking of a larger master plan when we can't even get the basement for our house done. That is a good question, but nevertheless, dreamers have to dream. Our quest to create a self-sufficient life is something we've always believed should be taught and demonstrated. For the past few weeks, we've been giving considerable thought to what that should look like on our little footprint in the Ozarks. It's certainly too much to unpack in one short article. If an off-grid, homestead or backwoods dream is rolling around in your mind, I invite you to follow closely for the next few weeks as we begin to clarify the direction we will be taking beginning this summer.

What's Wrong Here? - April 15

April 15, 2025

Day 1,292 of the Adventure

Shelley and I were out getting seeds and plants for the garden, and we ran across Raspberries and Blackberries.  Two of our favorite berries. While browsing the varieties, I noticed there were thornless ones which kind of appealed to me. I get plenty of scratches and cuts from the rogue greenbriers on our place. No point in intentionally planting more thorn bushes. I was focused on the boxes rather than the plants themselves. Once I had gathered up an armload of them, I noticed the stems! Something's not right here and now I'm confused!

Home-Grown Tomatoes and Trade Wars - April 14

April 14, 2025

Day 1,291 of the Adventure

The last time I posted anything about growing tomatoes, I started a firestorm of controversy. Here's the Article. Here's my response to it! Anyway, that's a battle for another day. Today, in one of the homestead groups I belong to, was this humorous posting about growing tomatoes. While I see (and appreciate) the humor of it, I can't help but comment. I recently saw an article in the Wall Street Journal which only caught my eye because of the word "Tomatoes" in the headline. It said "Tomatoes Become One of the First Everyday Casualties of Trade War". Now, I'm not a fan of the Wall Street Journal and not necessarily critical of the Tariff war going on right now. I believe there's a bigger picture to address than the pain and necessity of hammering out new trade agreements. With that said, there are some realities to the circumstances that can't, or at least shouldn't be ignored. The first is that, Yes, prices on imports are certainly going to be affected. But second, it related to imports. Third, rising prices for imports will naturally affect domestic prices as well. (That's just how that seems to work out) And finally, if we buy tomatoes at the store, we'll pay more. In fact, the article states that roughly 70% of tomatoes come from Mexico which could see an average store price reach $2.48 for a one-pint carton of grape tomatoes. (According to the USDA)

Between general "Trump Bashing", "Tariff Bashing" and "Doom and Gloom" of the WSJ (along with most other media) you have to sift through the facts a little. Without going into the dynamics of the politics and commerce effects, the fact is, that higher prices are a current reality and trade agreement negotiations will very likely exacerbate that for a while. Maybe a short while, maybe a long while. The solution....... Maybe get yourself okay with growing your own tomatoes. And, I'm not even referring to just tomatoes. Maybe get okay with growing anything you regularly consume. To take it a step further, maybe get okay with doing all kinds of things for yourself that you've never considered before. The art of becoming more self-sufficient, is synonymous the art of becoming less dependent. But, if all we are talking about is tomatoes, Home-Grown beats store bought EVERY TIME! There's reason enough right there!

Welcome To The Jungle - 2025 Edition - April 13

April 13, 2025

Day 1,290 of the Adventure

The 2025 edition of the "Jungle" has returned. We always love this time of year when the woods come back alive with greenery. It feels like life has been restored from the dormancy of winter. We probably should have had the garden planted by now, but too many other priorities have taken the place of garden work. It's going to have to happen very soon though. The basement work will need to be continued as well. Where we were dodging cold spells of frozen everything during the winter. We are now dodging the springtime rains. It's always something. However, if that "something" includes crowds of green trees out in the woods, I'll gladly put up with the rest.

It's Just Life! - April 12

April 12, 2025

Day 1,289 of the Adventure

Many times, the only things of significance that separates the days down here is the temperature on the thermometer and the number on the calendar. Especially when the day-to-day work is the same every day. Like working on the basement walls. Or, waiting for the rain to stop so we can work on the basement walls. Today is different though. Today's date on the calendar signifies that Shelley and I have been married for 45 years. And that IS significant. Especially for us, since we are only about 40 years old!....... We wish...... No, we married at the ages of 19 and 21. Making us 64 and 66 now. Many would consider that perfect for retirement, and I'd have to mostly agree. But no..... The chapter of life we are writing now is one of building a backwoods life and it is certainly a life of activity. Some people golf to stay active, some run marathons, and we build things. In that sense, I suppose the word retirement fits. I think we prefer to view life as just that, life. It's a matter of fitting in all of the things we wanted to do over the years but were too busy to actually do. Now, we're fitting those things in and adding campfires and gardens, hikes in the woods and relaxing to a backyard view of the sun setting over the Ozark Mountains. Yeah...... "Just Life" is a good way to describe it.

Thin Maple Syrup - April 11

April 11, 2025

Day 1,288 of the Adventure

Occasionally, I'll have a flashback of something that occurred decades ago. Things that happened when I was a kid that I really have no explanation why I would be remembering now in my mid 60's. Some of these memories, I suppose, shaped my life-view on how I see things today. Buried within some of those memories, are my experiences with "hard times". My parents were both children of the Great Depression. They did their best like everyone else but always retained a sliver of the reality of what it was like growing up in that world. When going through financial struggles later in life, the skills and solutions they likely experienced growing up when they were kids, probably provided similar solutions that I got to experience. One such "solution" was home-made maple syrup. Did they learn that growing up? I don't know. All I know was that when I was about 10 or 11, I often ate pancakes with a home-made version of maple syrup. Actually, I never thought anything about it and am actually surprised why I even thought about it this morning. My mom did a lot of experimentation with meals when I was young and some of it left a bad impression. Not all. but some. I don't remember being opposed to the syrup making. Sometimes we had store bought and sometimes not. When the "real" maple syrup was not in the budget, she made a home version of it for us. I don't know the recipe, but I believe when I say it was water, sugar and a bit of maple concentrate flavoring, that would probably be either pretty close or exactly it! It was heated on the stove to be hot, but thin like water and slightly sweet and slightly..... mapley. I'd probably just eat a pancake dry nowadays rather than pour hot maple flavored sugar water over it. But as a kid, it was just part of breakfast.

Why do I even bring this up? I suppose for no reason other than to illustrate that in hard times, we made do with what we had, and nobody really ever considered that were poor or impoverished. Hardship comes and goes. If you simply live your way through it with some intention of working your way out of it, eventually, you will. If you embrace it and allow it to become your primary "identity", you may never escape the grip of lack. I often look at the self-sufficient life we are living and see traces of those hard-times experiences. They are used as reminders of where we came from and why they do not have to be a part of our present or become our future.

The Tedium of Backwoods Life - April 10

April 10, 2025

Day 1,287 of the Adventure

Just like with everything, backwoods life can be repetitive at times. Sometimes for the good and sometimes not. I can think of quite a few chores and tasks that I could easily do without. Other than it would leave us vulnerable. Cutting firewood is a good example. It's a hard job, dirty, tedious and....... necessary. If I could enjoy the warmth of a fire in the wood stove without all the work, I'd do that. But that's just not part of the bargain. The same is true for swapping out implements on the tractor. Not complicated necessarily, just something that I never look forward to. I now understand why my late uncle Ed, owned 13 Allice Chalmers WD-45 tractors. He had one for each implement. I always laughed at it, now it makes perfect sense! He never had to switch out attachments..... ever! I'm sure I could come up with a dozen examples of the things I'd rather not repeat day after day. Then, there are the things I don't mind repeating. Coffee by a morning campfire is one. Coffee or iced tea on the back deck watching the sunset and the darkening woods. The sounds of owls and whippoorwills calling in the darkness, and..... deer wandering into camp.  Deer visiting us is not always a daily thing, but it happens often enough to be considered routine. Still, every time one or more appear at the edge of the woods, we will make a quick step to the window and look.  The tedium of it all!
