Day 76 - 289 Days to go
Base Camp Coffee of the Day: Lost up the Creek (Colombian Roast)
I stumbled upon an interesting "Adventure Quote" that I used today. Maybe it has a special meaning to me because my heritage is mostly Scandinavian (Norwegian to be exact) So I get to claim at least a little bit of Viking ancestry. "Vikings, it seems, make their own way." A lot of our Adventures over the past 15 years seem to feel that way. The Resorts are certainly no exception.
Back in the early 2000's after closing a business related to medical equipment and leaving that field entirely after close to 25 years of commitment to it, there was no good clear path forward for us. My parents offered to help get me directed to college to learn a new skill. That wasn't appealing. My oldest daughter pleaded "DAD.... GET A JOB!" That's humbling. My wife Shelley said, "I'm with you whatever you decide." That was good to hear. I felt I had two basic skills. Medical equipment design and fabrication. I couldn't go back to that. The other option was that I was pretty good at home building, renovation and woodworking. That wasn't real exciting either because of the costs to get in, and the competitiveness at the time. An odd recurring infomercial on TV got us thinking about the Investment Real Estate business. After several months of watching late night and early morning TV sales pitches, we decide to take that route. That's a story for another time, but the fact that we plunged ourselves into it (without buying the infomercial course) was probably an indication of the "Viking making their own way" deal. We consider it to have been a success, where honestly a lot of people don't. We did end up eventually buying the course to learn more and ultimately became the subject of one of their Featured Success stories in their monthly publication. The Viking got a little notoriety.
The Resort Adventure began early in 2011. with the purchase of what is now the Cross Timbers Cabins property (which ironically was in worse shape than "The Last Resort" property was when we started on it a month ago.) One resort property lead to another with the Treehouses being the obvious highlight...…… SO FAR!
We are in the middle of construction on our tenth treehouse cabin now with more scheduled for the drawing board soon. We are not the first people to think about treehouses, but seem to have been at least among the first in the area to actually begin building luxury treehouse cabins that guests can enjoy for themselves.
If building treehouses doesn't qualify as "Making your own way" I'm not sure what does. The point, however, is not to focus on the product as much as the dream. I've heard it said that "If you have a strong enough 'WHY', You'll figure out the 'HOW'!" So "Why" did we follow a dream of a Resort Adventure? The seeds of it have been growing in me from childhood.
The adult in me finally caught up to the kid in me!
