Day 894 of the Adventure
I think today was the first legitimate "short sleeves at 8am" mornings we've had this year. Chilly..... yes, but not unbearable. Our outdoor morning fire ritual has mostly been on hold through the winter. It's odd to think that building a fire doesn't fit with the colder weather. The problem is that a winter fire is best when necessary. It's mostly just a nuisance if not necessary. Plus, for it to really do much good, it must be of a size and scope to actually do some good as far as providing warmth. Doing that burns through firewood way too fast. Springtime fires and even Summer fires don't require much more than a few pieces of random "forest floor" wood to be sufficient. It's wood that is not much good for anything else anyway. It's often too rotten to save for the woodstove but still has a little fire left in it. It's also made up of old stumps we've pulled from the ground in the area of our cabin building project. Stumps are full of dirt and rocks. They're way too much of a problem to try to do anything with other than contribute to the morning fires. It's been over two years since some of them were taken out and we still have a respectable pile of them to burn. In fact, a new one went onto the fire pit this morning!
