Day 901 of the Adventure
If you've been following our garden building project on YouTube, you'll know that one of our bigger challenges is that of keeping deer out. People all over social media are quick to offer their favorite anti-deer remedies. Some actually are pretty clever. I guess one of my favorites is to build a "Deer Buffet" of sorts, out of things they like better than garden vegetables. The idea is to entice them away from the garden to greener pastures. I'm not sure what exactly that could be, maybe corn. I'm not sure. In our woods, it was enough work to create one garden space with all the tree cutting and brush clearing. I'm not sure I want to go through all of that again, plus plant a batch of "deer crops" just to make the deer happy. Then, whether they like their personal buffet or not, they still have the opportunity to invade ours. Other suggestions have been flashing lights, ultra-sound devices, tin pans hanging around to twist in the breeze and bang together and so on. I suppose that even a feisty dog running loose could be an adequate deterrent. After consideration of all this, we opted for an old-fashioned deer fence around the whole garden. Hopefully, it's tall enough. It's about five and a half feet high, which I know deer can technically jump that high. We'll see, if they get in, we have the ability to extend it higher if need be.
As I was working on it today, along came a welcome but untimely thunderstorm. It's a welcome event not only for the soaking it gave everything, but also because I was ready to quit for the day anyway. If you would like to see the process of turning a patch of undisturbed woodland into a garden, there's some links to it. We've been clearing trees, clearing brush, building raised beds, putting up fence, digging post holes, digging more post holes, planting things, digging more post holes, building a rain collection system complete with a water tower, getting ready to build a greenhouse and more. We are in week seven of an eight week plan. I have a gut feeling we're going to miss our deadline a little. Here are the links: Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, Week 4, Week 5, Week 6. Weeks 7 and 8 will be coming up soon.
