Day 985 of the Adventure
There is no such thing as "Thunder Muffin" season. At least not in the sense that they would only be available in a short window of a "Season". What makes Thunder Muffin season a thing is that it's really best experienced during Blueberry season, which actually is a thing. In our part of the world, blueberries are ripe for the picking around early June. It's usually about a three-week period. During this time, for as many years as I can remember, Shelley has made two or three trips each season to stock up on blueberries and blackberries. She will fill three or four large coolers on each trip. You may ask, "How can anyone use that many blueberries?" After all these years, I honestly still don't know the answer to that. You would think at least a few would show up in a cobbler, but no. Occasionally they can be found in pancakes. Maybe on top of some ice cream. The problem is that no matter how many or few end up for one of those purposes, I would say that it only represents one or two percent of the total. I think most of them meet their demise in a smoothie blender. My idea of a good blueberry smoothie would be that of a few blueberries along with a couple scoops of ice cream and some cold milk. I could get into a smoothie like that. Most of the smoothies I see coming out of our kitchen are well beyond that and have taken a turn from the milk and ice cream into the unsettling direction of seeds, strange and unknown liquids, green stuff and a variety of other substances of which I'm a little uneasy about. Smoothies aside though, there's one blueberry staple in our life that we can actually get anytime. It's just a special treat during blueberry picking season. I'm referring to Thunder Muffins. They are baked fresh every day at the berry farm and I can always count on a box of them when Shelley returns from a day of picking. During picking season, fresh berries are used in the baking. All the rest of the year, frozen berries are used but it does not diminish the deliciousness of them in any way. The Berry farm is about a 15-minute drive from the cabin and never out of the question if a thunder muffin crisis occurs. Often a thunder muffin at the berry farm has been the start of a day on the road when we are headed in that general direction.
Right now we are in the middle of Thunder Muffin season and I expect this is but the first of many thunder muffin breakfasts we'll be enjoying over the next few weeks.
