Day 989 of the Adventure
For the past few days, I've been working on building a small, introductory, experimental hydroponics system. The concept of hydroponics is not complicated. Some of the science behind the nutrient solutions still has my brain working overtime. Even that, I believe, will not be too difficult to manage once I get into it a little further. Our daughter Mandy is building one as well, so the two of us have been working together to figure it all out.
If you are unfamiliar with the process, it involves growing plants in a liquid nutrient solution rather than traditional soil growing methods. A thin film water fortified with nutrients are constantly being fed through the growing trays and back into the storage reservoir. The amount of space needed is much less and can be stacked vertically. The obvious benefits of space, lack of weeding, greater concentration of plants are among the reasons why hydroponics is popular. The fact that the whole thing is capable of operating indoors adds a "year round" element to it as well. In addition, because the nutrients are monitored and tailored to the specific plants, growth and yield is typically much higher. I turned the pump on in this system yesterday and outside of getting the flow rate adjusted correctly and sealing a couple leaks in the return gutters at the end of the growing trays, everything worked perfectly. Once we get a good handle on the process, I believe our greenhouse will probably become a hub of hydroponics!
