June 2 - The Campfire Trail - Fresh Is Best

Day 975 of the Adventure


I had honestly forgotten how good this tasted. It's been over thirty years since we had our last real garden and I don't think I've had fresh green beans since then. When relying upon store bought canned, frozen or even "fresh" (which I don't think is actually very fresh) beans, they all just rate somewhere around a 3.5 or 4 on the taste scale. After 30 years of that, green beans had dropped to one of the lowest positions on my most favored food list. Not ever "Bad", just never that good! Even much of the farmers market green beans, when they have them, were not very exceptional. I kind of get the feeling they've saved the best for their own personal pantry, leaving the poorer quality for the market. Then, like with about everything else, if you are late getting there, the best is picked over. So today, I had the treat of remembering what fresh picked, tender and flavorful green beans were all about. Our plan was to eat the first batch but then save back the next two or three pickings for preservation for later. I'm not so sure about that now. I think beans can be on the menu again right away.
