June 3 - The Campfire Trail - A New Frontier At The Cabin

Day 976 of the Adventure


We have officially entered new territory when it comes to our food production and self-sufficiency efforts. Many of you have noticed that we have recently ordered a Freeze Dryer. It has arrived, been set up and the first initial batch of "break in" food has been processes. The fascination level is high for me and I'm looking forward to the first round of real food we can send through it. It was recommended to process a load of bread first to remove any manufacturing odors (new car smell, they called it) that may be lingering in it. When completed, the bread did not seem to contain anything other than a bread smell. Regardless, they also recommended throwing it out. We tossed the entire batch into the morning campfire and the whole hillside smelled like burnt toast for a while. That's just the comical side of it. I was actually very impressed with the results, even though it was a "throw away" product. The process was easy and yielded the results we expected. Our first real test will include herbs that have been overtaking our ability to stay ahead of. Basil and Cilantro is going in next, and I'm very interested to see how it comes out. I believe many updates will follow!
