Day 977 of the Adventure
Sometimes I see irony or significance in the strangest things. Wandering through the vegetables today I noticed a little runner on a Cucumber plant that had just been hanging out in mid-air yesterday. Today it had grabbed ahold of a cage and was busy wrapping itself around it, and presumably, reeling itself in closer. The thought "Hold on tight" came to mind and I chuckled. I don't know how runners know where to reach for. When we lived in Ozark, a bunch of Wisteria sprang up near our storage shed. There's nothing quite as aggressive as a determined Wisteria. It was also near where I parked our fishing boat. As it grew, the runners would latch onto anything and everything possible. One day I noticed them reaching for the boat. Not just one or two but probably close to a dozen of them. They had already stretched their way out about four feet and still had about two feet to go before reaching the boat. Were they reaching in any other direction? NO! Only towards the boat as it was the closest thing in proximity. I guess anyway. HOW does a plant know to do this? Are there little wisteria eyes on the ends of the runners? Knowing Wisteria, I have no doubt had they made it all the way to the boat, they would have removed the motor, hauled the anchor away and probably even stolen the gas can. I know this because my parents had a Wisteria beside their house once that worked it's way in behind the siding and was pulling entire 4x8 sheets of siding right off the wall. Pulling nails from the walls in the process. Thugs, these Wisterias. I don't think Cucumbers are quite so ill-intentioned and I'm not worried too much about them. My guess is they are more of the "engineering" type of plant, sending out reinforcing "tie-offs" to support their pickle production. I think the main stalk just issues orders to the runners to reach out, grab something and Hold On Tight! I guess we could all learn a little from a pickle!
Carry On
Adventure Quote: “Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'Press On!' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” ―
