February 2 - The Campfire Trail - A Dusty Relic of the Past? Or Modern Renaissance?

February 2, 2025

Day 1,220 of the Adventure

Self-Sufficiency is an intriguing concept to many, and I suppose, a dusty relic of a thought from the past to many others. Sometimes I get the sideways glances as I talk about this as a passion. I guess the question involves the thoughts of whether turning to the old ways of the past are the dominant images that come to mind. I think the terms of "Homestead", "Back to the Land" and "Self-Sufficiency" all give off that kind of a vibe. All of these terms certainly conjure up a bit of a romantic and nostalgic recollection of those bygone times. Maybe more of a Waltons, Mayberry or Little House on the Prairie feel rather than the photo I've selected for this article. This photo implies a dreary and hard existence.

In reality, the modern homestead life is, or at least can be, something far different. Beginning from a desire or a need for self-sufficiency, a "homestead stye" of solution is possibly the best "all-encompassing" answer. Whether it's for gaining control over cost's, gaining control over quality of life or simply returning to a more simple life, the modern homestead movement may certainly provide answers. Our motives are varied, but mostly involve the desire to develop a sense of control over our environment, what we consume and how we become better prepared for the many outside forces that try to drive us into a mold of social structure. Other folks may fit that mold, we have a hard time with a lot of it, most of the time.

Does the desire for living the life of a "Homesteader" relegate us to the classification of "Dusty Old Relic?" Perhaps so. We are simply enjoying the journey of discovering many of the older staples of self-sufficiency. While exploring them all from a newer, modern approach. One example of that is in the solar power system we've constructed. It certainly is not a solution of the distant past. Yet provides that element of independence that you would expect from a perspective of old-school self-reliance. Obviously, that's just one example of many. I believe the stigma of homesteading is evolving into a new era of desire as government, culture and financial pressure relentlessly encroaches on our lives. There's something to be said for breathing clean air, enjoying the connection to nature as well as our distant roots. All while developing a step-by-step pathway to a more independent lifestyle.
