No Pain No Gain! - February 27 - The Campfire Trail

February 27, 2025

Day 1,245 of the Adventure

We've only really taken about two and a half months off since the last cement work we were doing in the basement. Now, here we are mixing a very small amount of it for our woodshed and it's kicking my butt! It sure doesn't take long to get out of condition for it. Maybe being 64 years old would have something to do with it.

Our woodshed has a cement base under each of the stacking areas. We got all of them done except for one last fall. or was it the fall before that? I don't remember but the important fact is that we still had one left to pour. That happened today and as small of a job as it was, it got the best of me. I had to sit between mixes which there were six of them all together. The good news is, it is now done, and we can stack this final section full as well. No Pain, No Gain........... I guess!

STOP Doing This - February 26 - The Campfire Trail

February 26, 2025

Day 1,244 of the Adventure

I've heard it said that the best way to develop a more positive outlook on life is to STOP watching the news. I'll admit that I'm a bit of a news junkie but mostly I'd have to agree with this. Being informed is important..... I suppose..... but there comes a point where it becomes counter-productive. It feels like so much of it exists to do nothing more than to stir up emotions for or against something. It builds up anxiety towards other people and ideas. In reality, I'm not sure that complete abstinence from the news is a bad thing. Honestly, the times I've totally ignored the news did not hinder my life in the least. In fact, it helped me stay focused on more important things to my life. Most recently, I've been following news mainly that has to do with trending economic conditions. Some that has to do with social conditions. Both of them effect my thoughts about how to stay prepared for six to twelve months down the road. Of course, this is nothing more than an attempt to predict the future. Or maybe how to recognize the writing on the wall. My continued belief is that times are going to continue to be difficult for a while. Nothing seems to change my perspective on that. So, with that said, I intend to browse headlines in the event of something unexpected. Beyond that though, I plan to heed my own advice and take an extended break from it to "detox" from the mostly negativity. Time to focus on the spring season and continue building the self-sufficient life we've begun. After all, self-sufficiency will serve us well if things get better. It will serve us even more if things decline. With that said........

Garden Clean Up - February 25 - The Campfire Trail

February 25, 2025

Day 1,243 of the Adventure

We spent part of the day yesterday cleaning up the garden. There's not a lot left to do there before we can start planning the planting. The fire was what was left of the tomato plants from last year. When we started the house building project last fall, everything else came to a standstill, including clearing out the garden beds. Now, we're poised to begin another growing season. I know I'm a little pre-mature with it. There are still a few weeks left before we can safely begin, but it's encouraging to feel the place beginning to come alive again.

While we wait for the season to get a better foothold, I think we're going to spend the day working on the woodshed. There's still another cement pad to pour and temps in the 70's today will make that a good small project to complete. The whole backwoods life includes with it, a never-ending list of chores and projects. I've mentioned before that these projects are the substitute for my fitness program. The added benefit is that I have the pleasure of doing things out in the woods in nature at the same time. It's hard to beat that combination. I'm pretty sure that a fire will be a part of today's activities.

Looking Ahead - February 21 - The Campfire Trail

February 21, 2025

Day 1,239 of the Adventure

Well, this is NOT what I'm looking at right now. But when I close my eyes, this is what I'm seeing! Winter is administering Psy-Ops (Psychological Operations) on us right now and I'm just about done with it. Within days, I see a weather forecast that's going to break in the direction of spring and I'm ready for it. Look Out garden, here we come!

Saying Good-Bye to the "White" Stuff - February 24 - The Campfire Trail

February 24, 2025

Day 1,242 of the Adventure

A week ago today, we were on the verge of getting 16 inches of snow and eight below zero temperatures. It turned out to only be 6-7 inches of snow, but we did reach eight below zero. Being this late in the winter season, I was sure it wouldn't last. Today we are in the 60's and planning to work in the garden, preparing it for spring planting. If you look carefully, you can see the greenhouse in the distance over the top of the Jeep. The snow is essentially gone now. What little is left will certainly not make it through the day today. The sights, sounds and "feel" of Spring is here and I think it might be here to stay. We'll be removing a couple small trees that shade the solar panels, removing the last bit of tomato plants still standing, bringing in some natural fertilizer (chicken poo) and some fresh compost to bolster the fertility of the raised beds. Whether it is or whether it isn't (Spring), today will be a spring-cleaning type of a day.

A Conflict of Values - February 23 - The Campfire Trail

February 23, 2025

Day 1,241 of the Adventure

We spent the afternoon and evening with friends watching the movie "Homestead". If you haven't seen it, it's a post-apocalyptic story of the breakdown of society after a terrorist event. In a nutshell, a nuclear device is detonated in Los Angeles leading to the subsequent cascading power outage across the country. While not a violent movie, they do a good job of telling a variety of stories related to the survival and on-going life in a world devoid of services. Which includes, municipal water, power and adequate law enforcement. In addition, the availability of food becomes almost immediately scarce. This leads to desperate measure being taken between those who have nothing and those who have taken the position of preparing themselves for such an event. It addresses the conflict of values facing them as they grapple with the challenge of helping other at the expense of their own family security. Tough questions...... if you possess a conscience.

Along with a couple of comical "snipes" at things like hoarding toilet paper and the failure of electric vehicles, the movie did address some practical thoughts related to things like making sure medications were a part of the thought process when considering moderate or long-term crisis. There was a lot of "food-for-thought" moments during the movie and we enjoyed the discussion of "What would we do in this situation" if it occurred in real life.

I've said many times that I do not prepare for apocalyptic events. Even though there is a certain percentage of probability for one to occur. Our preps are more in line of weather related events, civil unrest related events and even perhaps a localized terrorist event. Even then, we do not build our life around the fear of those things happening. We simply make that awareness a part of normal life rather than an obsession which could rob us of the peace of normal life. Security is a popular buzzword now as it relates to almost everything. "Food-Security" is a popular use of it. We've simply made it a point to be as "food-secure", "shelter-secure", "energy-secure" as we can. Along with all the other "security" related secures you can have. Once the mindset shift is made to that position, it no longer feels weird to raise a garden and preserve its produce for both short and long-term use. It feels normal to enjoy powering the homestead with energy from the sun via a solar power system. Normal is harvesting the firewood from our forest to provide heat through sub-zero temps like we had last week.

There is certainly a negative stigma related to the culture of prepping. I believe that if that paradigm is shifted over to the term Practical Emergency Preparedness, it suddenly becomes much a less "fringe" concept and more of a "Practical Responsibility" concept. Just some food for thought as we think to our future, however we happen to view it.

A Crisis of Dependency - February 22 - The Campfire Trail

February 22, 2025

Day 1,240 of the Adventure

Last week, I received a number of responses concerning the whole "Crisis" subject and most of it was prompted by the egg shortage and their subsequent high prices. It made me stop and think whether that was the crisis itself or just a symptom of a much more serious, true crisis. I'm not even referring to the "bird Flu" that most believe is causing the egg shortage. I believe it's more basic than that. I believe there is a "Crisis of Dependency" that can be discovered at the root of much of our culture and conditions these days. We have largely given up control of a lot of our future by simply relying upon so many outside resources and forces to sustain us. If you think about it, we are dependent upon, employers, grocery stores, utility companies, mechanics, handymen and even the government at almost every level to provide for us. Of course, all of it comes at a cost. A recent monthly grocery store run cost us $750. My local mechanic's hourly rate is now $125 per hour (and that's quite a lot less than the dealer rate) Costs of almost everything we consume is drastically higher now than just a few short years ago. Not to mention the interesting conversations happening now concerning ingredients in processed food. And almost everything available in our stores is "processed". Sometimes I feel that I'm beating the whole Self-Sufficiency subject to death, but really.......... Looking at the world through the lens of dependency, I think it's important to beat the drum even more.

Maybe I'm just weird, and I'm not offended when people think that of me. A friend of mine made a comment to me years ago that stuck with me ever since he said it. I was managing a modest sized production facility, and he was one of the technicians working there. One day I was in the shop trying to help with an issue and probably getting more in the way than anything else. My friend said, "We can handle this. Our job is to take care of these day-to-day problems. Your job is to deal with the problems you see six months or twelve months down the road." It's been one of the few governing principles that has remained in my mind for over 40 years. What does that mean in terms of self-sufficiency?

In many ways, the "security" we believe we have surrounding our lives is slowly becoming increasingly fragile. At the same time, we, as a society, are becoming more and more dependent upon it. For those who ignore the signs of it, some may find themselves relying upon credit cards more just for food and essentials. They may be starting to choose between making the car payment or paying the electric bill. Heaven forbid that the morning trip to Starbucks gets scaled back to getting the morning coffee at the Quick Stop! Or even the coffee maker on the kitchen countertop at home. Everyone deals with it differently, but the raw edges of frayed nerves is showing up more and more in the circles of social media. It's easy place to vent and solicit supporting comments and views from many others feeling the same pressures.

Self-Sufficiency is not a switch that can be simply turned on. That may be the reason for many, to not choose that path. If there is a "switch" related to self-sufficiency, I believe it would be that trigger that comes in the form of a decision to begin. In a moment, one may decide "I've had enough, and things have to change". That may be the switch. All it's really done is turn the motor on. From there, the engine needs to warm up, speed up and eventually begin moving. Every day, month or year that passes before that engine is turned on, results in motion that moves us further away from independence and closer to complete reliability on other people, systems and governances. All of which continually bring us closer an unreliable and fragile life of dependency. And that, I fear, is the real crisis we face.

We started the engine on self-sufficiency back in the spring of 2021. Six months later we had found a wilderness acreage to begin our journey upon. Roughly six months after that, we had a simple cabin, water, septic system and a small solar plant for energy. By the next year, we had completed much of the preliminary systems and made the cabin livable vs minimally functional. By the following year we had about a quarter acre garden producing an abundance of food, which was preserved and stored in a variety of forms. Of course, there's many other things that have happened along the way, but hopefully you get the picture. It's a process of many steps and it begins with the first....... Making the decision.

My Personal Planetary Alignment - February 20 - The Campfire Trail

February 20, 2025

Day 1,238 of the Adventure

For the next few weeks, I 'll be facing that awkward time of year where my head on the pillow on my side of the bed, the window on the east side of the cabin and the sunrise are all in perfect alignment. Meaning that, unless there is heavy cloud cover, I wake up at sunrise. If I haven't already gotten myself out of bed by then. Sunrise for us right now is around 6:53am. If I'm still sleeping by that time of morning, it's because I want to still be sleeping by that time of morning. It's late February, cold outside and I have already fed the wood stove three times throughout the night. Today, I would have happily slept in an extra hour. But no...... Now, I have to find something to do. I guess I'll make coffee for a start! That could take the edge off my attitude a little this morning!
