Modern Day Victory Garden - July 30

 July 30, 2025

Day 1,398 of the Adventure

I heard the term "Victory Garden" the other day for the first time in a very long time. More importantly, it was being used in its original context back from the World War I and II setting. While it was not in the context of the wars but within the framework of the purpose of the Victory Gardens during the wars. Back during World Waa I and II, the concept of "Victory Gardens" was established as a method to increase food production during wartime. It was also meant to bring communities together, promote self-sufficiency and boost morale during war. For the most part, they did just that. In today's world, we are not battling the difficulties of a global war, but we are certainly fighting the effects of the difficulties of personal economic hardships. This was the frame of reference that the term Victory Garden was being used. Personally, I feel it's a very appropriate idea. This year and last, Shelley and I have raised a garden for the first time in over 30 years. Along with the garden, we placed a strong emphasis on preserving the produce we grew. As we're in our second year. I find that when I pass the canned goods shelves and shelves of freeze-dried items, we still have an abundance from last year while we are adding to the new preserves this year. More importantly, we have not had to purchase anywhere near the level of produce as we have in the past. We've been eating fresh during the growing season and once that comes to a close, we'll be back to the stockpile of preserved goods through the fall, winter and early spring. As I continually encounter videos and postings about how life has become financially nearly impossible for many, the idea of a modern-day Victory Garden certainly has a new-found place in our world.

Morning Stillness - July 29

 July 29, 2025

Day 1,397 of the Adventure

I have not spent much time just sitting here on the back deck enjoying the mornings lately. The early morning hours are the only tolerable ones for working outside. After that, it's time to find things to do inside if at all possible. This morning was different. The roof over the summer kitchen is done and the next step in the house construction can wait a day. I know, that doesn't square up with our reputation but sometimes it needs to! At least every now and then. So, this morning, I watched the sun come up from the vantage point of the back deck rather than the roof. Coffee and a Bagel with Jalapeno Cream Cheese close at hand. I've discovered that when I'm not making a lot of noise around here, it's pretty quiet. I should probably do that more often.......... The quiet part!

Just Say No - July 28

 July 28, 2025

Day 1,396 of the Adventure

Okay, this was borderline a "Grumpy Prepper Chronicles" posting and the only reason it wasn't was because I wanted the specific picture to show up in the link. Otherwise, it would have fit the bill perfectly! I just bought this knife a couple of days ago and then promptly returned it less than 24 hours after I first used it. Partly because it pushed my frustration limit immediately into the stratosphere. Partly because by the time I was ready to change blades in it, the darn thing was broken! I was on the roof of our house construction project and nearly stood to my feet to throw it as far as I could into the woods. However, I knew that I'd be making a trip back to where I had purchased it soon enough and I needed the satisfaction of not only getting a refund for it but also expressing my complete disdain for it in the first place.  Backing up to the beginning. I was after a utility knife that had a little bit bigger of a handle for those awkward cuts of shingles hanging over the drip edge of the roof. Small handled utility knives just didn't give me the kind of grip I needed to horse my way through the cut. This one looked like it might work. I noticed it's easy to open "trunk" on the back to store extra blades. I also noticed the lock button at the front. Not necessary but also not really a problem if you want the blade locked. I guess. Other than that, I assumed it would function as any other utility knife would function. BUT NO!!!!! I found out right away that the blade only stayed deployed IF you held the blade retractor button in the forward position while cutting. Once the blade detected the cut was done, it automatically retracted itself and the button had to be slid forward and held there again for the next cut. I can't tell you how impossible that is while reaching over the edge of a roof and holding the knife upside-down to cut off a shingle hanging off the roof. It's not possible. I quit using it for that because it was impossible and returned to using a small handled knife. While awkward as I can even express, I was able to cut shingles as long as they were lying flat on the roof. Cutting stiff shingles while trying to hold the stupid blade retractor button forward makes whatever "safety claim" for that feature completely void of merit. By the time I needed to change the blade to a fresh one pushed me over the edge. It was some kind of process that went: 1) Push blade retractor button forward and hold. 2) lock the blade "lock button" into the locked position, 3) Remove blade by grabbing the blade and pulling it forward out of the knife. 4) Insert a new blade into the slot pushing it firmly into place. 5) Release the "Blade Lock" button. 6) continue using the knife.

No single step in this entire process worked....... AT ALL. Much less the idea of pushing and pulling on a razor blade to get it into and out of a knife that was doing everything in it's power to prevent either of those functions.

Moral of the story. If you are a manufacturer of ANYTHING............. JUST K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid!)

Creamy Cucumber, Onion, Tomato with Siracha - July 27

 July 27, 2025

Day 1,395 of the Adventure

Several weeks ago, I ran across a great looking recipe for Creamy Cucumber and Onions. I saved it. Then I lost it! I've looked everywhere and I can't find it but I remember that the photo of it looked delicious. Like everything else in my life........ When in doubt, just figure it out. Shelley was demanding I put up or shut up about my hopeful recipe and she wasn't giving me the "shut-up" as an option. Basically, that meant "Make your cucumber and onion recipe. there's cucumbers and onions all over the kitchen, freshly picked from the garden. So, after a hot day working on cabins, I gave up the delay and started chopping ingredients. I have no recipe but I can tell you that it's pretty close to the following.

6 - 8 small to medium cucumbers quartered and sliced
1 cup (roughly) of cherry tomatoes, halved
2 small to medium onions quartered and sliced
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup sour cream
1/4 cup red wine vinegar
salt and pepper until it's the way you like it
and the secret ingredient. - a tablespoon of Siracha

Stir it all up, chill it and eat it!

A Prepping Myth vs Fact - July 21

July 21, 2025

Day 1,389 of the Adventure

Okay, I have a weird indulgence. I like watching reaction videos on YouTube. Reaction videos are when ordinary people watch a movie, listen to a song or watch some other form of video for the first time and record their live reaction to it. I ran across a group of reactions to the song "A Country Boy Can Survive" by Hank Williams Jr. the other day and watched a few of them. The song, (here's a link to it) is about how capable country folks are when it comes to "surviving". What I thought was funny in the reaction part was how the "reactors" almost all commented that if the economy, or the world in general, went sideways, how they knew that the answer for them would be to escape the city and flee to the country, where people had survival skills. It's a good theory, but in reality, if you wait that long, you'll be too late. Most have already learned their skills and positioned themselves for dealing with hard times or calamity far ahead of you. If "Stuff Hits The Fan" it's very likely they won't take too kindly to outsiders trying to muscle their way into their world expecting to be taken care of or taught how to do it after the fact. The book "One Second After" deals with how all of that would go down and it's not a pleasant prospect where simply escaping to the country is going to solve the problem. The time to develop the skills, and positioning for anything, whether big or small, is now. I'm writing a series of reviews on the "One Second After" book and when it's done, you can find it on days of July 16-19 in this blog. If you're interested in reading it, there's a link below.

Did I Just Forget something? - July 26

 July 26, 2025

Day 1,394 of the Adventure

Pushing past heat today got us past the roofing of the summer kitchen. There's still a little roof left to install over the stairwell, but I think one good morning of work will see that done. maybe tomorrow. We actually planned to be done with this part yesterday and then I realized I'd forgotten to get three vents prepped to cut in. It's all good now though. It's not just the issue of the heat on the body that is a problem. Once the sun gets up and beating down on roof and roofer, the shingles get soft and moving around on them can easily and quickly destroy them. So, our working window is barely three hours each day. That's assuming we get started while it's still slightly dark at 6am.

20 + 44 = Me - July 20 - Grumpy Prepper Chronicles 06

July 20, 2025

Day 1,388 of the Adventure

I've figured out that the main difference between me and a 20 year old is 44 years! Actually, after thinking about it, it's the 44 years of extra wear and tear that's the real problem. When I was about early 40's something, I found it funny when I was trying to focus in on a piece of trim I was nailing. I was holding it by myself with a left hand and a left shoulder while trying to line up a nail gun for a shot. My problem was, when using my shoulder to help brace it in place, my face was about three inches away from the trim and I couldn't focus my eyes on it good enough to really see what I was doing! Oh, so that's what old people talk about when the say "Hold it farther away so I can see it!" I dismissed it with a chuckle........... It's not funny anymore. I also noticed around that same time that once I got down on the floor to work on something, I really should have had a plan for getting back up. I joked that I'd have to roll myself over to a piece of furniture or window curtain that hung low enough to pull myself back up. I won't say I've got bad eyesight, or bad knees, or bad shoulders, or bad back, or bad hips, but I will confess that none of it is anywhere near as good as it used to be. Some parts worse than others. Climbing up and down ladders, crawling around on a roof or mixing cement and laying blocks all stand in as a testament to my age and partial state of broken down-ness. Still, I suppose I'll keep up the charade of pretending to be in my prime and keep pressing forward. After all, there's a house to build and it ain't going to build itself. I know. I checked this morning and it was exactly in the same condition as it was when I knocked off yesterday! So here's to all us old guys who just don't have the good sense to know when we should slow down!

Perspective - July 24

 July 24, 2025

Day 1,392 of the Adventure

It used to be much easier for me to just run up the ladder, do the work and wander around of a roof. Not so much any more. It seems like every time I go up there, I'm taking my life into my hands. I know that's not true. It just feels that way. Still, the fewer times I make the trip, the better as far as I'm concerned. Today, I struggled with that option. I had already done everything that needed done....... with the exception of taking a picture. It's amazing how much inner debate occurred over it. Finally, I decided I'd scale the ladder one more time for photo's sake and get a picture looking down. It's not that high and it's not that steep, but I'd still rather not go up there any more often than absolutely necessary. The fact that I did after all that is a testimony to my stupidity or the importance of getting a quick photo. You'll have to decide for yourself which it was!...... And whether or not it was all that important!

Setting an Early Morning Mood - July 25

 July 25, 2025

Day 1,393 of the Adventure

For the past few weeks, temperatures have been in the mid to upper 90's around our part of the Ozark Mountains. It's certainly giving us the summertime feel but it's also a bit intense when the sun reaches our work location on top of the roof. That happens around 9am. To be able to actually get anything actually accomplished, we've been trying to start around 6am. Sunrise now is at about 6:15 so the first few minutes of the day include coffee on the back deck. At the same time, watching the sky lighten up and decide when it's time to just get started. It's almost too easy to just sit there sipping coffee and watching the day begin. Alas......... Time to climb the ladder and make some noise!

End of the Day Comfort Food - July 23

July 23, 2025

Day 1,391 of the Adventure

Today ended up being one of those chaotic days that felt like I was being dragged around by circumstances beyond my control. It began with a 2am phone call that an electrical problem had developed at the campground. In the middle of the night, those are the terrible things that represent all kinds of questions and problems all at the same time. When awakened from a deep sleep to something like this, it's never something you can just roll back over and forget while you fall back to sleep. Ironically, I had been reading a novel for the past few days about an apocalyptic "grid down" event which had crippled the entire nation. In my world, I was being notified of a micro grid down event in my own back yard. One that I must find an answer for. By morning, with very little sleep, I began the day with a couple hours out of the roof of the summer kitchen, adding several more rows of shingles, not to the north facing roof slope. When the sun got high enough, I abandoned that effort and headed into town to survey the problems with the electrical service to a handful of our rental cabins. Between contemplating it for most of the rest of the night and on the roof and driving to the campground, I had narrowed down my suspicions to just a couple of likely culprits. The most likely, was strain on the system for a small group of cabins from the high heat and excessive A/C use by the guests. My maintenance crew and I studied the system and came to the hopeful conclusion that there was probably too much of a total electrical draw on the specific system serving a cluster of seven cabins, A solution was not complicated but would involve several days-worth of work out in the heat. In addition to several thousand dollars-worth of equipment upgrades. Not even really knowing where to start, I headed off next to a local electrical supplier to attempt to define the necessary parts needed to fix our dilemma. After several stops, multiple purchases of parts, tools and other supplies, A couple stops for gas station food to keep me quickly fueled, I returned home by late afternoon. The next few days will be strenuous enough the way it is, so I intended to cool off. get a little rest and mentally prepare for a tough job. After a diet of gas station food all day, nothing, and I do mean NOTHING..... sounded good for supper. While browsing the cupboards for something "non-invasive" I noticed the cannister of lowly oatmeal facing me at about eyeball level. My stomach said..... "Yeah, I can do that!" So, with that, I cooked up a double serving of breakfast comfort food. After a diet of things that tend to send a body into gastric rebellion, a bowl of oatmeal was just the ticket to tame everything down and deliver a reminder that we shall survive the abuse I had subjected my system to all day. An hour later, I'm feeling mostly normal again!

One Second After (Part 1) - July 16

July 16, 2025

Day 1,384 of the Adventure

I started reading a book I found at dad's place after he passed away a couple weeks ago. It's one that I doubt he actually read. The subject of it really wasn't where his interest was focused. I had heard about this book from some of the "Preparedness" groups I follow. They all highly recommended it. It is fictional but based on the very real threat of a "grid down" event. In the case of this story, it was a cataclysmic EMP event or "Electromagnetic Pulse" which again, is a real thing. Some say the probability of an EMP is very remote. Others say it's inevitable. I don't know. I would be more apt to believe in a regional grid failure over the total collapse of grid services along with the accompanying destruction of all electronic devices at the same time as a result of a full EMP. Still the story was a captivating one from the perspective of how we've come to rely completely on the luxuries of electricity and electrical devices. It's sobering how devastating things can get with a sudden absence of those staple luxuries in our lives. I planned a slow read of this and it turned into about a four-day speed read. At a little over 500 pages, that's saying something about how strongly the storyline draws the reader in. I think I may elaborate on a few of the main points of what I felt was important in the reading of One Second After over the next couple of days. Until then........

Green Side Up - July 22

July 22, 2025

Day 1,390 of the Adventure

It's been slow going on the summer kitchen part of the house for the past week or so. Rain slowed us down a little for a while then the heat set in. We've been getting all of the little time-consuming details done prior to starting the shingles on the roof for days. A lot of that had to do with digging your fingernails into the sides of the building close to 20 feet above the ground in some places. What might be a 10-minute job standing on the ground, for me, may become 45 minutes hanging off a ladder that high up. Parts of this work is just not meant for "old guys". Nevertheless, most of that finally got done and yesterday, we were able to get the starter run of shingles installed. This morning in the early twilight, we began running shingles in earnest. By 6am, we were climbing ladders. By 9am, the sun was full on the roof where we were working but the shingles were done on the south-facing side. Tomorrow, we plan for the same routine on the north facing side of the roof. The sun hits earlier there due to the position of the trees, but we also don't have to start that side while standing on ladders. On the north side we can stand on the stairwell roof putting the main roof eaves at "workbench" height. Green Side Up is the rule of the day!

The Magic of Believing - July 15

July 15, 2025

Day 1,383 of the Adventure

So many times, I find myself staring blankly into the woods that surround our cabin. My mind tends to simply relax and think of nothing. Is that bad? I don't think so, mainly because I remember the times when my thoughts were much too crowded with all of the busy-ness of life, work, family, trying to work in some leisure and trying to shake the feeling that it may just always be this way. I'm not even sure if it's age or frustration that changes one's perspective on what's most important. Whatever it is, the change finally occurs. For me, what has become important is the peace and quiet of not engaging in the "rat-race" to the extent that it robs the joy of quiet and simple living. I used to ask myself, "How do I get there from here?" I think the first step is simply believing that you can. If you really believe you can, then somehow, you end up finding a way.

More Rain and More COW's - July 14

July 14, 2025

Day 1,382 of the Adventure

We were stuck inside for most of the day today due to rain. What was forecast as a "sprinkle" turned into several hours of downpour. The upside to regular rain has been the mushroom crop around here. Shelley was out picking a big Chicken of the Woods (COW) I found near her Jeep. I spotted several others around the property that are not quite big enough to harvest yet.  I think there is a season for these things and it's "not winter". It seems that once warm weather arrives, we'll find them off and on all spring, summer and fall. Most of this one is destined for the freeze dryer. I snuck a small handful to cut up in a pot of mushroom soup that I ate for lunch today. These are easy to spot in the woods. Once you get past the anxiety of learning to identify them, you can enjoy them added into anything that calls for mushrooms. They are very mild, have a meaty texture and will take on the flavor of whatever you are cooking them with.

Some Roof is Added - July 13

July 13, 2025

Day 1,381 of the Adventure

Even though you really can't see it in the pic, we've managed to get most of the roof deck on the far side of the summer kitchen. At some point I will probably need to start referring to it as "The House". For perspective, where you see the blue tarp, will eventually be a deck stretching all the way to the cabin. Where you see the green ladder will also be a deck/entrance into the kitchen. Of course, there's quite a bit of backfilling that needs to happen up close to the foundation. It feels very tall right now but backfill will bring that into perspective.
